This past weekend, Vin Diesel topped the box office charts for the first time in a non-Fast and Furious film since 2005’s The Pacifier, with Riddick beating an admittedly weak crop of competition that included no other major new releases. The sequel earned an estimated $18.7 million — over than $5 million less than its predecessor The Chronicles of Riddick did on 350 fewer screens in 2004. (Granted, Chronicles cost more than twice as much as Riddick and was released at the peak of the summer movie season.)

Following the action-oriented Chronicles of Riddick, the sequel Riddick is a welcome return to the more horror-inclined first film in the series, Pitch Black, but it fails to effectively utilize one of the primary plot elements of the original film: the darkness. Here are a few new indie horror movies recently added to the fall schedule just in time for Halloween:
- Dark Touch: An Irish-French production from the director of Don't Look Back about an 11-year-old girl who's the sole survivor of a massacre. Look for it in limited theatrical release and on demand on September 27.
- The Facility: British film from the producers of Monsters about an experimental drug test gone wrong. It hits a few theaters on September 27 and will be on demand starting September 24.
- A Night in the Woods: Another UK film from the same producers of Monsters, this time found footage fare about a hiking trip that turns into a battle for survival. It's available on demand on September 24 and in a small number of theaters on October 4.

With True Blood just finishing its sixth season last month, word has come from HBO that next season will be the hit vampire show’s final one. As with Season 6, Season 7 will run for 10 episodes (rather than 12 episodes in previous years), beginning in June 2014.
