Earlier this year, the long-awaited Jurassic Park 4 staked out a release date — June 13, 2014 — and now it’s staked out a director: Colin Trevorrow, whose claim to fame is last year’s indie comedy Safety Not Guaranteed. How does one move from a micro-budget indie comedy that earned about $4 million at the box office to a blockbuster sequel produced by Steven Spielberg? Something Faustian perhaps?

Last week, word came that Sam Raimi was contemplating writing another Evil Dead movie, which people logically assumed would be Evil Dead 4, but now his longtime producing partner Rob Tapert has clarified that if it were to happen (and that’s still a big “if”), it would more accurately be Army of Darkness 2. This distinction might seem nitpicky, given Army of Darkness was a sequel to Evil Dead 2, but it actually makes sense, given Army of Darkness‘s time-travel departure from the first two Evil Dead films and the fact that a new Raimi entry would probably want to differentiate itself from the new Evil Dead franchise. Yes, I said “franchise.” For more on that, read on.

Hoping to avoid the fate of NBC’s recent re-imagining of The Munsters (Mockingbird Lane, which had only one episode air as a Halloween special), A&E’s re-imagining of Psycho‘s Bates family, Bates Motel, begins its 10-episode first season on Monday at 10:00 PM ET/PT. Prepare yourself by “checking out” the main characters, episode summaries and a series of trailers.

Not to be confused with the superior 2000 film of the same name, Spiders is a competent but sterile and predictable creature feature that, despite amble action, would’ve been better served going for an R rating. Read about it in my review of Spiders.

Brooding, introspective German cinema might not be the average horror/suspense fan’s typical viewing choice, but given a chance, The Silence should prove a powerful experience that fans of AMC’s The Killing in particular will want to check out. Read about it in my review of The Silence, which hits theaters in limited release today.

Last week, I mentioned how unusual it is for director James Wan to have two films hitting theaters within six weeks of each other — The Conjuring and Insidious Chapter 2 — and now, not surprisingly, the latter has been bumped back on the schedule. Perhaps fearing that The Conjuring would eat into its business, FilmDistrict has shifted the Insidious sequel’s release — albeit not by much. Insidious Chapter 2 will now hit theaters three weeks later, on September 20 instead of August 30.
