Can’t wait until Insidious Chapter 2 hits theaters in August? If the first trailer is any indication, Dark Skies might fit the bill. It features a similar look, a similar child-in-peril theme and the same producer (Jason Blum) as the 2010 hit Insidious — except with aliens instead of ghosts. And, like Insidious, it looks pretty darn good. Granted, you should take that with a grain of salt, because writer-director Scott Stewart’s two previous films — Legion and Priest — seemed similarly promising but ultimately fell flat. Is third time the charm? Or will it be his third strike? We’ll find out when Dark Skies lands on February 23.

As genre shows like AMC’s The Walking Dead and FX’s American Horror Story continue to earn strong ratings, you can expect more cable networks to venture into horror, and early next year, it’s A&E’s turn. As reported earlier this year, Bates Motel is a prequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho that explores an adolescent Norman Bates’ relationship with his mother. The show — will, despite its prequel status, is set in the present day — will also apparently delve into the lives of the nearby townsfolk, who have dark secrets of their own.

We hadn’t heard much about the sequel to the surprise 2010 hit Insidious since it was announced earlier this year, but now comes word that Insidious Chapter 2 will hit theaters on August 30, 2013. Even better news is the fact that director James Wan, writer Leigh Whannell and producer Jason Blum are all returning, as are cast members Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins and Lin Shaye. Production will begin on January 15. There’s no word yet on a plot, but if you saw the first film — in which a husband and wife try to rescue their comatose son from an otherworldly entity — you know it ended on something of a cliffhanger that practically begged for a sequel.

Let the speculation begin on what sort of insanity (literal or otherwise) American Horror Story will drag out next year, as FX has announced that the series has been renewed for a third season. The anthology TV show wipes the slate clean each season by introducing all-new characters, settings and storylines (although recycling many of the same cast members), and it consistently pushes the boundaries of basic cable with its sexuality, violence, language and outrageous concepts. The first season was set in a haunted house and featured ghosts, mass murder and the Antichrist, while the second season is located in an insane asylum and has been jam-packed with serial killers, mutants, evil Nazi scientists, demonic possessions and aliens.

Thanksgiving isn’t traditionally a time when major studios look to release horror movies, and this year isn’t any different. As such, there are no major theatrical genre releases this week, and the home video horror/suspense fare is of the little-known indie variety.

The writing on the wall was arguably there from the very first episode, based on its mediocre ratings and on ABC’s lack of patience with genre shows (R.I.P., The River, Eastwick, The Gates, Happy Town, etc.), but now it’s official: 666 Park Avenue has been cancelled. The fact that the series fell steadily in the ratings each episode — from 7 million down to 4 million viewers — sealed its fate. There is some good news, though: ABC will at least air the remaining six episodes (13 total) before presumably replacing it with a new midseason show in January.
