There’s good news and bad news for Stephen King fans awaiting the small-screen adaptation of his 2009 novel Under the Dome — in which a small town finds itself isolated from the rest of the world by a mysterious transparent dome. The good news is that the show has been picked up for a full 13 episodes and is set to air next summer. The bad news is that it’s no longer being broadcast on Showtime as previously planned. Instead, it will air on CBS.

The Collection just might be the most pleasant surprise of the year — if a movie full of impalements and mutilations can be considered pleasant. Read about it in my review of The Collection.

The Apparition

If the kids in Red Dawn weren't able to fend off an invasion, the future might look something like The Day, and it would be up to another ragtag bunch of kids like the ones in this grim, post-apocalyptic film to fight for survival. How do they do? Read about it in my review of The Day.

Paranormal Activity 5 Gets a Release Date

The box office performance for Paranormal Activity 4 — about $54 million to date domestically — has been disappointing compared to its predecessors in the series ($30 million less, to be exact), but any film that generates that much money from a $5 million budget has to be deemed a success, so it’s not terribly surprising that Paramount has commissioned a fifth entry in the franchise. (Also helping is the fact that it’s earned much more overseas than in the US.) And now we have an official — an unsurprising — release date: October 25, 2013. The Paranormal Activity franchise has ruled the Halloween season for the past four years — as the Saw films had done for so long before PA took over — but given PA 4’s recent performance, you have to wonder if 2013 is the year a worthy challenger comes along to swipe the horror crown. (In the case of Saw, though, that didn’t happen until the sixth film.)

Dark Skies Movie Trailer: Insidious With Aliens?

Can’t wait until Insidious Chapter 2 hits theaters in August? If the first trailer is any indication, Dark Skies might fit the bill. It features a similar look, a similar child-in-peril theme and the same producer (Jason Blum) as the 2010 hit Insidious — except with aliens instead of ghosts. And, like Insidious, it looks pretty darn good. Granted, you should take that with a grain of salt, because writer-director Scott Stewart’s two previous films — Legion and Priest — seemed similarly promising but ultimately fell flat. Is third time the charm? Or will it be his third strike? We’ll find out when Dark Skies lands on February 23.
