Even though he hasn't directed a film since 2007's Hostel: Part II, Eli Roth is a busy, busy man. Here's a rundown:
- He's signed on to produce director Ti West's The Sacrament, which Roth describes as "Ti's first mainstream movie, without sacrificing the quality and unflinching horror of the subject matter." Specific plot details, however, weren't provided.
- Dimension has picked up two of his productions: Aftershock, in which he also co-stars as one of a group of people in Chile struggling to survive in the wake of an earthquake that sets free a group of violent maniacs from an insane asylum, and Clown, based on a fake trailer about a possessed clown costume that takes over a family man's identity. Aftershock is all wrapped and ready to go (it's currently showing at the Toronto International Film Festival), while Clown is set to begin production soon.
- Speaking of Clown, Roth is teaming with that movie's creators to write the long-awaited feature film version of his own fake trailer, the slasher spoof Thanksgiving that played as part of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez exploitation homage Grindhouse.

If you watch a horror movie and nothing happens, does it make a sound? Apparently so. Read about it in my review of Munger Road.

Normally, another modestly budgeted found footage horror movie wouldn’t be particularly noteworthy, but the eco-horror film The Bay doesn’t have a “normal” behind-the-scenes horror movie pedigree. It’s produced by the team of Jason Blum and Steven Schneider, who brought us the Paranormal Activity franchise and Insidious, and is directed by Academy Award-winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man, The Natural, Good Morning, Vietnam, Sphere). The Bay had been sitting on Lionsgate’s schedule without a date for some time before moving to Roadside Attractions for distribution, which unfortunately pretty much guarantees a much smaller release.

Pushed all the way back from March 2012 to January 11, 2013 -- presumably to take advantage of Jeremy Renner's star-building roles in The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy -- the release of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is finally closing in, and now we have the first trailer. It looks promising in a blockbuster-y, CGI-strewn, action-horror hybrid sort of way, but it can't seem to shake the stink of the similar-looking Van Helsing. I'm holding out hope, though, that director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) will deliver something more palatable than that Stephen Sommers flick.

Set in a (short-lived) wedding reception, REC 3: Genesis breaks out of the confines of the Barcelona apartment building that served as the setting for the first two films, but that’s not the only thing that’s glaringly different about this third entry in the series. Read about it in my review or REC 3: Genesis.
