I tend to defend Hollywood when the subject of remakes comes up, but a recent rash of copycat-itis is trying my patience. Not only are there two competing Dracula TV shows and two competing TV shows from the Silence of the Lambs universe in development, but now there are also two shows based on the Washington Irving story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Following reports of Fox bringing the tale to life on the small screen comes word that The CW is also working on a show called Sleepy Hollow…

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Matisyahu, Natasha

The Possession.

If nothing else, the upcoming movie The Possession — about a family tormented by a dibbuk (a demon from Jewish folklore) — is good for some fun photos. These stills hint in particular at some dynamic moments during attempts to exorcise the entity by a rabbi, played by musician Matisyahu. We’ll find out if the actual film is as enjoyable when The Possession hits theaters on August 31.

It seems a bit too early to deem them “vintage,” but we can still reminisce about the ups and downs of 1990s horror cinema through these trailers from the decade. I mean, who doesn’t remember where they were when Leprechaun came out? …Or maybe that’s just me.

Lindsay Lohan in
I Know Who Killed Me.
© Sony
I don’t know if what appears on screen in Scary Movie 5 will be any good, but behind the scenes ought to be quite interesting, given the recent additions of perpetually troubled stars Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan to the cast. While Lohan’s involvement has been rumored for weeks, E! Online is reporting that the actress, whose last stab at horror/suspense was the abysmal I Know Who Killed Me in 2007, has officially signed on — along with Sheen, who starred in Scary Movie 3 and had a cameo in Scary Movie 4 in which his character dies. According to E!, though, part 5 will be a “complete reboot of the franchise,” so the entire four-film slate may very well be wiped clean. Directed by Malcolm Lee, Scary Movie 5 also stars Ashley Tisdale and hits theaters on January 11, 2013.

Get ready to make some space on your coffee table for a new book (And if you don’t have a coffee table, buy one; what, were you raised by wolves?). I’ve always enjoyed horror movie posters — check out some of my choices for the best and worst — and John Edgar Browning’s Graphic Horror: Movie Monster Memories uses this unique art form to trace the history of monster movies from the early 20th century to today. Like horror movies themselves, their movie posters are ever adapting, reflecting the morals and aesthetic values of the time in which they were made, and Graphic Horror presents a fascinating and attractive timeline featuring over 400 posters (including some cool foreign ones) and movie stills spread out over almost 200 pages, ranging from mainstream hits to more obscure fringe flicks. Each decade gets a brief writeup, while a number of horror experts add their two cents on select films that have struck a chord with them over the years, providing interesting insight and opinions that may or may not gel with your own. Whether you’re a horror fan or newcomer to the genre, though, you should be able to find something of value in Graphic Horror. Check it out at schifferbooks.com.

For those of you who’ve seen Prometheus and felt left in the lurch by the ending, it should come as little surprise — and a lot of relief — that 20th Century is moving ahead with plans for a sequel. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace have already signed on to reprise their roles but that writer Damon Lindelof may not return due to potential scheduling issues. The rather vague target date right now for Prometheus 2 is “2014 or 2015.” But don’t be surprised if all the questions left dangling by the first film aren’t answered in the sequel, as director Ridley Scott has reportedly conceived of Prometheus as a trilogy.

Don’t look now, but October is only two months away, and you know what that means: another Paranormal Activity movie! We’re up to 3 5 4 now, and Paramount has just released the first trailer. There’s no official plot synopsis yet, but here are some things you can cull from the trailer (MODEST SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t seen the other movies):
