Slasher sequel Hatchet 3 has just begun filming around New Orleans, and the cast has rounded out nicely with a number of familiar genre veterans. Danielle Harris and Kane Hodder are returning as protagonist Marybeth and undead serial killer antagonist Victor Crowley, respectively. The supporting cast includes Zach Galligan (Gremlins, Waxworks) as a local sheriff, Derek Mears (Friday the 13th) as a S.W.A.T. team leader, plus Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs, Halloween II), Caroline Williams (Halloween II, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Diane Ayala Goldner (the Feast movies), Jason Trost (The FP) and Dee Snider’s son Cody Blue.

A quartet of horror/suspense movies have recently received concrete release dates for this summer, and although they all feature very recognizable stars, I wouldn’t expect any of them to have wide releases. Still, they look pretty interesting. Here’s a peek:

NBC has had Hannibal -- a TV show exploring the early relationship between serial killer Hannibal Lecter and FBI profiler Will Graham (featured in Red Dragon and Manhunter) -- in the works for some time now (with a premiere set for midseason 2012-13), so it's a bit odd to find out that Lifetime is also developing a series from that universe. The Lifetime show, dubbed Clarice, will revolve around Clarice Starling, the protagonist of The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, and will focus on her early work as an FBI agent -- presumably the time between those two films.

I, among many, was initially a bit skeptical when I heard that there was going to be a TV show based on the Michael J. Fox comedy Teen Wolf, but the first season of the MTV series was a pleasant surprise, featuring engaging, if occasionally melodramatic, storytelling comparable in style and quality to that of the more heavily hyped The Vampire Diaries.

Elijah Woods Goes Psycho in the First Maniac Trailer

If nothing else, the new NSFW trailer for the remake of the 1980 exploitation flick Maniac succeeds in making the new version look about as scuzzy as the original. Whether that's a good or bad thing is debatable. The remake, which just finished showing at the Cannes Film Festival in hopes of fetching a buyer, comes from the makers of P2 and stars Elijah Woods as a loner with Norman Bates-ish mommy issues who stalks women on the streets of New York City, collecting their scalps in the process. One interesting revelation from the trailer is that Maniac is shot from the killer's point of view -- lending a sort of "found footage" feel. Depending on how soon it gets picked up for US distribution, we could see it in theaters (or straight to video) by the end of the year, but 2013 may be more likely.

It wasn’t expected to do a whole lot at the box office, and Chernobyl Diaries delivered just that, earning a scant $8 million in its opening frame this past weekend, good enough for only fifth place. That said, the film’s budget is so small — especially in comparison to the summer blockbusters competing against it — that it can hardly be considered a flop; we’ll reserve that designation for Battleship.
