Non-horror fans probably think that all horror fans want in a movie is buckets of blood and guts, but as the direct-to-video slasher Sweatshop shows, that's not the case. It has strong gore scenes -- courtesy of the killer's humongous weapon of choice, a hammer that would put Thor's to shame -- but the splattery mayhem can't make up for the weak acting, shoddy writing, annoying characters and ineffective direction. Although it's not a horror movie, Contagion has a similar lasting effect; just as Jaws made people avoid the ocean, Contagion might make you think twice about shaking hands, touching your face or standing near anyone who sneezes. Perhaps the best advertisement for the movie Creature, opening across the US on September 9, to draw in horror fans is just to repeat the film's MPAA rating details: it's rated for "for bloody violence, grisly images, some sexual content, graphic nudity, language, and brief drug usage."
