Cowboys and Zombies: The Dead and the Damned DVD Review

Posted by About.com Horror & Suspense on July 26, 2011

The low-budget horror-western The Dead and the Damned was originally called Cowboys and Zombies, and based on its release the same week as Cowboys and Aliens, you’d think  the savvy business move would’ve been to keep that title, but alas, little about this film is savvy. Read about it in my review of The Dead and the Damned.

Two eagerly anticipated indie flicks are one step closer to hitting the big screen. First, Burke and Hare, the dark comedy about real-life 19th-century grave robbers from director John Landis (An American Werewolf in London), has been acquired by IFC Films for a September 9 limited run. The movie stars Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) and Andy Serkis (The Cottage, the Lord of the Rings films) in the titular roles and marks the first feature film from Landis (who’s busied himself directing TV shows and documentaries) since 1998’s ill-fated Blues Brothers 2000.

Dream House Trailer: Buyer Beware?

Despite a top-notch cast headlined by Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts, the thriller Dream House hasn't exactly generated a lot of buzz. It was postponed from an early 2011 release date and was the subject of some reshoots, so I keep expecting it to be a hot mess, but with the release of the first trailer, I've got to say that it looks like a fairly promising blend of thriller and drama with a hint of the supernatural. But BE WARNED: the trailer gives away what seems to be a significant plot twist that hadn't been explained (at least from what I'd read) in previous press materials. I assume that doesn't give away the entire movie, but it still feels like a bit of a risky move by Universal -- and perhaps a necessary one in order to separate Dream House from the pack of "spooky house" movies. We'll see how it turns out when it hits theaters on September 30.

It looks like fans of the Bloody Disgusting Selects series of horror movies will get a double dose of terror in August. Since the previously announced Cold Fish (arriving August 5) won’t benefit from the series’ typical AMC Theaters release, BDS is unleashing the Spanish flick Atrocious in the same month — starting August 17. Atrocious is the latest in a string of “found footage” movies, this time documenting the murder of a family staying in a remote summer home (Keep your fingers crossed for a happy ending!). Check out the trailer and some photos.

Paranormal Activity 3 Trailer Reveals “Bloody” Plot Details

The first trailer for Paranormal Activity 3 — opening October 21 — has landed, and in typically secretive PA fashion, it reveals only clues at what the plot will entail. One big revelation, though, is that it seems to take place in 1988 and explores the origins (via ’80s camcorder home video) of the supernatural encounters from the first two films’ protagonists, sisters Katie and Kristi. Can you say “children in peril”?

A few more details on the recently announced Evil Dead remake have been released recently, courtesy of an interview with writer/director Federico "Fede" Alvarez in an Uruguayan newspaper. The most immediately compelling is his revelation that Bruce Campbell, star of the original Evil Dead trilogy, will have a cameo "towards the end of the film" (Google's translation). His claim comes as he's explaining that his aim is that Campbell would be the only "known" actor in the film; the rest would be fresh faces.
