One of the more buzz-worthy movies in recent weeks has been Knights of Badassdom, a horror comedy that has been featured at the recent Comic-Con and in Entertainment Weekly, a pretty impressive feat for a little indie film. Much of the attention has arisen from a cast that has fanboy cult-dom written all over it, including Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Summer Glau (Firefly, The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Danny Pudi (Community), plus Steve Zahn (Joy Ride, A Perfect Getaway) and Jimmi Simpson (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Breakout Kings), but now that a trailer has been released, the material can start to speak for itself.

It showed in only eight theaters this past weekend, but the acclaimed (88% on Rotten Tomatoes) British alien invasion pic Attack the Block scared up an estimated $130,000, with a better per-screen average ($16,250) than any of the major motion pictures — Cowboys and Aliens, The Smurfs, Crazy Stupid Love — that opened on Friday. Let’s hope this spurs Screen Gems to expand its distribution. Final numbers are due late Monday.

The release schedule for Kevin Smith’s Red State continues to evolve, the latest update involving an early release in Los Angeles August 19-25 at the New Beverly Cinema, with Smith on hand for a Q&A after almost every screening (two each day, tickets available at coopersdell.com). The proposed remake of/sequel to David Cronenberg's telekinesis classic 1981 chiller Scanners has morphed into a TV series, according to Deadline. Reportedly inspired by the success of The Walking Dead, Dimension Films is going the small-screen route, with director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) on board to executive produce and possibly helm the pilot episode. Let's hope it ends up airing on a channel that allows for glorious head explosions like this notorious scene from the original film.

Cowboys and Zombies: The Dead and the Damned DVD Review

Posted by About.com Horror & Suspense on July 26, 2011

The low-budget horror-western The Dead and the Damned was originally called Cowboys and Zombies, and based on its release the same week as Cowboys and Aliens, you’d think  the savvy business move would’ve been to keep that title, but alas, little about this film is savvy. Read about it in my review of The Dead and the Damned.
