The werewolf fairy tale Red Riding Hood finished third at the box office in its opening weekend, earning a modest $14.1 million this past Friday to Sunday. It’s a far cry from director Catherine Hardwicke’s previous effort, Twilight, but without the built-in audience of the Stephenie Meyer book, no one expected Red Riding Hood to come close to that smash hit. Final weekend numbers are due late Monday.

Super 8, the super mysterious monster/alien/whatever movie from J.J. Abrams, has been the subject of much speculation over the past year. Now, the details of the film have become a bit clearer with the release of a full-length trailer. It certainly looks like it has a nostalgic Spielbergian feel to it — not surprising, given Steven Spielberg produced it — but is it more E.T. 2 or Cloverfield 2? We’ll find out when Super 8 hits theaters on June 10.

2011 might be the cinematic Year of the Alien, with movies like The Thing, Battle: Los Angeles, Apollo 18, Super 8, Paul, Cowboys & Aliens and The Darkest Hour set to hit the big screen, but one of the most promising of the bunch might not even reach the US this year. Attack the Block, a lighthearted British sci fi-action-horror film about a group of inner-city kids battling an alien invasion, is scheduled to open in the UK this May but has yet to secure American distribution, despite positive buzz.

While it had previously been mentioned that new Best Actor Oscar-winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) would star in Oldboy director Park Chan-Wook’s English-language debut Stoker, what hadn’t been reported is that he will be playing a vampire. At least, that’s according to The Daily Mail, which claims that the story — written by Wentworth Miller (Resident Evil: Afterlife, Prison Break) — was inspired by the classic novel Dracula. Firth will reportedly play the title character Stoker, a mysterious man who arrives in town to console his teenage niece (played by Alice in Wonderland‘s Mia Wasikowska) after her father’s death. Nicole Kidman will play the girl’s mother.
