The Sundance Film Festival’s 2011 slate is set, and there are a number of intriguing horror/suspense entries, including Kevin Smith’s Red State, the Norwegian film Troll Hunter and The Woman, a sequel to the Jack Ketchum story Offspring. The festival runs January 20-30, 2011 in Park City, Utah.

The Darren Aronofsky thriller Black Swan racked up an estimated $1.39 million in its opening weekend from only 18 theaters, for an eye-popping $77,444 per theater average. That's a record for Fox Searchlight and makes for a promising future for the film, which more than triples its number of screens this week. It's also good news for star Natalie Portman's Oscar chances, since the awards show tends to celebrate art house pics that break through into the mainstream.

Bucking conventional movie release strategy, the upcoming apocalyptic horror movie Vanishing on 7th Street will be available on demand to home viewers — on January 7, 2011 — before hitting theaters (in limited release) on February 18. This isn’t a new strategy for Magnet Releasing, which has handled past films like The House of the Devil and Survival of the Dead in a similar manner.
