Britain’s legendary Hammer Film Productions is known for its renditions of classic horror tales like Dracula, Frankenstein and The Mummy, but 1972’s Vampire Circus is something quite un-traditional: a colorful, violent, sexually charged, trippy, very ’70s story of, well, a vampire-run circus. It’s attained cult status over the years and is now finally available on DVD and Blu-ray. Read about it in my review of Vampire Circus.

The cast of Aliens.

When the next Alien movie hits theaters in 2012 (or even late 2011), a lot of the rumors that are popping up now on a weekly basis might seem silly, but for now, this is all we have to go on. The latest: New York Magazine is referring to the movie as Paradise — although it could very well be Alien: Paradise, or it could very well just be a working title. Despite big-name stars like Hilary Swank and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, a strong supporting cast that includes Christopher Lee and Lee Pace and a motivated studio like Hammer that’s trying to rebuild the genre reputation it had in the ’60s, the upcoming thriller The Resident is apparently going straight to home video.

Let the deep hurting begin. The time has come for the “so bad it’s good” cult sensation Birdemic: Shock and Terror to take over the world. Not only does the film now have an official DVD and Blu-ray release date — February 22, 2011 — but a sequel entitled Birdemic II: The Resurrection is scheduled for a launch that fall in glorious — wait…for…it — 3-D! Based on the production value of the original, I imagine the 3-D technology for the sequel will involve glasses with toy birds taped to the lenses. (Crosses fingers.)
