After the disappointing performance of Saw VI last year, Saw 3D returned to the top of the box office charts this past weekend with an estimated $24.2 million. As solid as that is, though, it's the third-worst opening for the franchise -- after the original and part six. Plus, the numbers are inflated because of the pricey 3-D tickets. Final numbers are due late Monday.

Well, the Saw franchise is done (or is it...?) with a resounding 3-D thud (for my money, I would've stopped after Saw IV) -- although if all you want to see is gore scene after gore scene with no particular concern for plot, have at it. Read about it in my review of Saw 3D.

This can’t be good news: the thriller Dream House, scheduled for a theatrical release on February 18, has now been dropped from Universal’s schedule altogether. Unlike the recent postponement of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, this delay isn’t due to studio difficulties but rather difficulties with the movie itself.

Here’s a new batch of Saw 3D photos that potentially reveals a bit about the plot — most notably the return of Cary Elwes as Dr. Gordon, who was left footless at the end of the first film. With the series’ penchant for chronological leaps, there’s no telling at what stage in the timeline Gordon shows up, but since this is (supposedly) the final Saw, we should find out once and for all what the heck happened to him. I hope.
