The Korean movie Mother is a murder mystery, a drama, a love story and even a bit of a comedy; it’s the sort of quirky hybrid you might expect from the director of the hit monster movie The Host. The story of a mismatched couple — a disgraced magazine reporter and an antisocial young hacker — teaming up to solve a 40-year-old disappearance, the murder mystery The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has left its native Sweden and is poised to land on American soil. It plays this week at Austin’s South by Southwest Film Festival and opens in about 30 cities nationwide on March 19 before expanding in the following weeks to more than 100 other locations.

It doesn’t come out until June 4, but in my book, Splice is already in the running for the best movie — horror or otherwise — of the summer of 2010. It played in the Sundance Film festival earlier this year and created enough buzz to be picked up by Warner Brothers, who unexpectedly announced a wide release planned for the start of the busy summer season — unusual for a horror film.
