Hardcore horror fans will know Ulli Lommel as a veteran director who in recent years has dealt almost exclusively with taking the lives of true-life serial killers and turning them into awful movies that even countryman Uwe Boll would be embarrassed of. Read more…

Werewolves. Vampires. Love triangles. Dramatic declarations of undying love. Rampant shirtlessness. It can mean only one thing: the first trailer for Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight saga. You’ll have plenty of time to absorb it, given the movie doesn’t hit theaters until June 30.

The Korean movie Mother is a murder mystery, a drama, a love story and even a bit of a comedy; it’s the sort of quirky hybrid you might expect from the director of the hit monster movie The Host. Mother opens today in New York and Los Angeles, then expands to other cities nationwide in coming weeks. Until then, read about it in my review of Mother.

The story of a mismatched couple — a disgraced magazine reporter and an antisocial young hacker — teaming up to solve a 40-year-old disappearance, the murder mystery The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has left its native Sweden and is poised to land on American soil. It plays this week at Austin’s South by Southwest Film Festival and opens in about 30 cities nationwide on March 19 before expanding in the following weeks to more than 100 other locations.

It doesn’t come out until June 4, but in my book, Splice is already in the running for the best movie — horror or otherwise — of the summer of 2010. It played in the Sundance Film festival earlier this year and created enough buzz to be picked up by Warner Brothers, who unexpectedly announced a wide release planned for the start of the busy summer season — unusual for a horror film.
