An American remake of the Spanish ghost story The Orphanage, originally slated to be helmed by Larry Fessenden, has now been handed over to director Mark Pellington, whose work includes the solid thrillers Arlington Road and The Mothman Prophecies. Guillermo del Toro is still attached as producer and has already co-written the script with Fessenden. No word yet on a release date, but with a director named, the ball seems to be rolling, and it could reasonably hit screens in 2011.

Two lesser-known, yet high-end, video releases make their TV debuts this week: the Spanish film Fermat’s Room (basically a cerebral Saw, in which people have to solve mathematical problems to escape deadly traps) premieres at 8:20 AM ET/PT on Sunday, January 3, on the Sundance Channel, and The Chaos Experiment, in which Val Kilmer stars as an unbalanced scientist who threatens to kill hostages if his hypothesis about global warming isn’t printed, airs on on Monday, January 4, at 9:00 PM ET/PT on Showtime 3.
