Paranormal Activity 2 Gets Director, Release Date

With the runaway success of Paranormal Activity in 2009, it should come as no surprise that a sequel is on its way, but the speed with which it’s moving might be a bit unexpected. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount is aiming to have Paranormal Activity 2 (not the actual title) in theaters later this year — on October 22, just a year after the first film made such a splash. Even more interesting about that date is the fact that it’s already been staked out by Saw VII (in 3-D!), setting up another battle between the Saw series, the longstanding king of Halloween, and the upstart Paranormal Activity series, which easily beat Saw VI last year. But wait, there’s another twist: who has Paramount chosen to helm Paranormal Activity 2? None other than Saw VI director Kevin Greutert. I guess if you can’t beat ’em…

Dexter cast members Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow each took home a trophy from Sunday’s Golden Globes, Hall for Best Actor in a TV Drama and Lithgow for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The 38-year-old Hall sported a knit cap, having recently revealed that he’s been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He didn’t mention his cancer during his acceptance speech, but a spokesperson had previously stated that Hall is almost finished with treatments and that the disease is currently in remission. He plans on attending next weekend’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.

After a month of limited engagements in just a few theaters, The Lovely Bones expanded nationwide this past week, propelling it to third place at the box office with a estimated take of $17 million — a solid amount, although the movie will be hard pressed to make back its $100 million budget domestically. Final numbers are due late Monday.

New Moon DVD Sparkling in March

You might want to avoid major retail outlets around midnight on March 20. That’s because rabid fans of the shirtless vampire-werewolf saga New Moon will be lining up to buy the DVD and Blu-ray, which goes on sale at precisely 12:01 AM. Its Saturday release date is unusual, but so is the film’s popularity, and Summit Entertainment’s official reasoning is to “allow for fans across the nation to celebrate at retailer’s midnight release parties.”

Special features on the DVD/Blu-ray release include audio Commentary by director Chris Weitz and editor Peter Lambert, a behind-the-scenes documentary, rehearsal footage, three music videos and more! I’m particularly looking forward to “more.” In the meantime, you can swoon over the video cover art above.
