Rumors of a third Ghostbusters movie have been floating around for years, but now it appears as close to becoming a reality as ever. That’s because co-writer and co-star Harold Ramis recently divulged plans to shoot the film in the summer of 2010 and release it in 2011 — at least a year earlier than previous estimates. He adds that, given the 25 year span from the first movie, the film will feature “some new young Ghostbusters” in addition to the old guard (Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson).

It’s quality, not quantity this week, with only a few new DVD releases that nonetheless include major films Paranormal Activity, Jennifer’s Body and A Perfect Getaway, plus the “should’ve been a major release” Carriers.
(Note: some sites have claimed for months that the long-delayed Renee Zellweger vehicle Case 39 is opening on Friday, but I have yet to find any evidence of it showing at any US theaters this week.)

Mia Kirshner, the actress best known for her co-starring role in the Showtime series The L Word, is joining the cast of The Vampire Diaries in a recurring role as Isobel, the wife of history teacher Alaric. She’ll debut in the episode airing on January 21.
Coincidentally, Kirshner just finished filming another vampire project, the sequel 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, in which she plays Lilith, the vampire queen responsible for the assault on the town of Barrow, Alaska in 30 Days of Night.
