Stephen and Steven might sound like an ’80s detective show, but it will actually be a teaming of entertainment titans, with Stephen Steven Spielberg’s studio DreamWorks signing on to the previously rumored TV adaptation of Steven Stephen King’s latest novel, Under the Dome. Variety calls the project a “limited series,” which I assume means a miniseries, although I’ve always thought that more TV shows should adopt the telenovela format and run for just a few months. No writer, cast or even channel has been attached to Dome, but Showtime seems like a logical destination, given DreamWorks’ recent association with the channel (United States of Tara).

Although there’s no official word yet, a couple of sources are indicating that the DVD for the smash hit Paranormal Activity might hit shelves as early as December. MoviesOnline.ca is reporting that the DVD will be released on December 29 — just in time for…no particular gift-giving occasion. VideoETA, meanwhile, estimates a January release date. Either way, the home video release would come an unusually brief 10 to 15 weeks following the movie’s wide release in theaters — perhaps an attempt to strike while the iron’s hot on this faddish film.

This week is all about New Moon‘s dominance of the box office and how complete said dominance will be (some say $100 million-plus is possible). On DVD, meanwhile, Thirst, Train and the thriller The Canyon lead the way in an otherwise light week.

The fourth annual (or thereabouts) After Dark Horrorfest has found its sixth film, one that could have the most controversial content since Frontier(s) was dropped from the 2007 film fest due to its NC-17 content. The Final tells the story of a group of bullied high school students who decide to take deadly revenge on the “cool kids” who’ve tormented them. In this post-Columbine era, you have to wonder how this will play in the mainstream media…assuming the mainstream media cares about the After Dark Horrorfest. We’ll find out when the After Dark Horrorfest hits screens on January 29, 2010.

At a recent book signing for his eagerly anticipated new book Under the Dome, legendary horror author Stephen King was videotaped tossing out the possibility that the mammoth novel could become “an HBO series.” He didn’t follow up on that tantalizing nugget to clarify whether he meant a TV show or a miniseries, or at what stage of the process this deal lies, so we’re left to speculate…
