Roman Polanski has lived through a striking collection of bizarre, triumphant and tragic events, his calamity rivaling some of the darkest horrors he has depicted on screen.

The Hills Run Red has gained some buzz, so I was a bit disappointed to find that it's a pretty by-the-numbers slasher with above-average production value. That doesn't mean it's not worth a rental; just don't expect your socks to to be rocked. Read about it in my review of The Hills Run Red.

This past weekend, Pandorum continued the string of horror box office disappointments, earning only only about $4.4 million in over 2,500 theaters. Adding insult to injury, Pandorum had a bigger budget than most horror flicks, at an estimated $40 million, so there's no chance it'll make back its budget domestically until it hits home video.
Garnering better buzz was Paranormal Activity, which sold out all but one of its college town midnight screenings on its way to around $78,000 -- the lone exception being State College, Pennsylvania, which had to compete with a Penn State football game. This doesn't include the "preview" midnight showings in several other cities, like New York and LA, which I can attest were just as popular (judging by the line snaked around the Arclight Theater in Hollywood).
As such, the movie will be expanding this week to 20 cities, although they're restricted once again to only midnight screenings, thus ensuring more lines around the block and more trumped-up buzz. It's a great marketing ploy, but it feels like a smack in the face to horror fans by Paramount, a company big enough to afford a wider roll-out without a "fake supply shortage" strategy that's usually reserved for Tickle Me Elmos and Playstations. Just cut the theatrics and open the film in a 300 or so cities with normal showtimes so that average fans with jobs and families can see it. If it's as good as people claim, word of mouth will carry it further than cheap marketing gimmicks.
