With The Wolfman arriving in theaters this week and The Crazies coming later this month, this seems like an appropriate time to look at horror remakes and why they’re often so reviled by fans (Wolfman and Crazies hopefully being exceptions to the rule). Buried, the thriller in which Ryan Reynolds basically spends the entire movie trapped inside a coffin with just a cell phone and a lighter, sparked a bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival last week, eventually ending up in the hands of Lionsgate for a reported $3.2 million.
The film’s simple hook, small scale, bankable star and positive buzz have made it a prime candidate to become a surprise hit, as studios all around are searching for the next Paranormal Activity, the micro-budget chiller that went on to earn over $100 million in the US alone. It doesn’t hurt that Lionsgate is the studio behind the similarly minimalist surprise hit Open Water, which likewise made a splash at Sundance in 2004.

In honor of this yesterday’s announcement of the Academy Award nominees, I thought this would be a good time to trace the history of horror and suspense movies at the Oscars. Genre films generally aren’t considered “elite” or “artistic” enough to be worthy of the Oscars ceremony, but you might be surprised to find that there have been almost 30 such films honored by the Academy since the awards began in 1929. But don’t take my word for it; here’s a list detailing the horror and suspense movies that have won Oscars.
