The Black List, the annual survey of the favorite unproduced scripts as voted on by film executives, was released on Monday with several horror-themed entries amongst the bunch. According to Deadline, one, Boy Scouts vs. Zombies, has already ridden the acclaim of the list to a swift purchase by Paramount Pictures. The plot is described (predictably) as follows: “A troop of Boy Scouts on their weekend camping trip must protect an island town from a zombie outbreak and save the local Girl Scout troop.” It’s written by Carrie Evans and Emi Mochizuko, whose only previous credit has been…Martin Lawrence’s College Road Trip? In their defense, they’re graduates of the Disney Writing Program, meaning they probably just did what Mickey & Co. told them to.

More and more, it seems that every year, the best, edgiest, most innovative horror and suspense movies are the smaller ones that either go straight to home video or receive only a limited theatrical release. This year was no different; it was a struggle to cut my “best of” list to only 30! But here it is: my choices for best limited release/direct-to-video horror movies of 2010.

Britain’s legendary Hammer Film Productions is known for its renditions of classic horror tales like Dracula, Frankenstein and The Mummy, but 1972’s Vampire Circus is something quite un-traditional: a colorful, violent, sexually charged, trippy, very ’70s story of, well, a vampire-run circus.
