Although Screen Gems and Sony are developing their new video game-based horror movie franchise Devil May Cry, they haven’t abandoned their existing 0ne, setting a release date for the fifth Resident Evil film: September 14, 2012. The previous three movies in the series have all opened in September, so this news should come as no surprise.

While the US has been “possessed” by exorcism movies like The Last Exorcism and The Rite, overseas there is Exorcismus, an English-language Spanish production about a teenage girl who’s been doing devilish things. Poor Amber Heard. She finally gets a horror movie she's starring in released (unlike All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and The Ward), and it completely tanks. Audiences perhaps couldn't grasp the nature of the action-horror hybrid Drive Angry (and I don't blame them), as it stumbled across the finish line in its opening weekend, earning only an estimated $5.1 million. This was good enough for only ninth place and was all the more measly when you account for the elevated ticket prices for 3-D movies. You have to wonder if this bodes poorly for Ghost Rider 2. Final numbers are due late Monday.
