A couple of dark entries that made splashes at the SXSW Film Festival this week have been picked up for US distribution. Kill List, the second pic from British director Ben Wheatley (Down Terrace), was bought by IFC as part of its IFC Midnight series. The plot follows a mentally scarred ex-soldier who unravels during his new job as a hitman.

The psychological thriller Shelter was scheduled to hit theaters in February but was pulled from The Weinstein Company’s schedule at the last minute (not surprising, given I saw no advertising for it whatsoever). Why? Maybe the company was too focused on its Oscar push for The King’s Speech, but just as likely is the fact that Shelter isn’t the type of movie you an create a wham-bang trailer for, and it doesn’t feature highly bankable stars.

Sequels to a pair of popular horror movies are on their way, although when and where they end up playing will likely vary. Silent Hill Revelation is the follow-up to the 2006 video game adaptation Silent Hill and will be released theatrically in early 2012, with filming just underway. A few days ago, we got a look at Adelaide Clemens in the starring role as Heather Mason (pictured). Reportedly, the movie will be based on the storyline of the Silent Hill 3 video game.

The werewolf fairy tale Red Riding Hood finished third at the box office in its opening weekend, earning a modest $14.1 million this past Friday to Sunday. It’s a far cry from director Catherine Hardwicke’s previous effort, Twilight, but without the built-in audience of the Stephenie Meyer book, no one expected Red Riding Hood to come close to that smash hit. Final weekend numbers are due late Monday.
