The acclaimed little 2010 indie creature feature Monsters is going the blockbuster route: a big-budget sequel. In this case, though, “big budget” is a very relative term, seeing as how the original cost, by some estimates, less than $50,000 (and by other estimates, as much as $500,000). Monsters 2, meanwhile, will carry a price tag in the $5 million range, meaning we’ll probably get to see more monsters, but it will be interesting to see if that means the drama-cum-travelogue tone of the original will give way to a more action-oriented sequel.

It’s already had a stage play adaptation, a TV movie adaptation and a sequel, but Brian DePalma’s 1976 flick Carrie is now officially getting the big-screen remake treatment. Technically, you could call it another adaptation of Stephen King’s novel rather than a remake, but that would take all the fun out of complaining about yet another remake. [Insert ironically generic “Why can’t Hollywood come up with original ideas?” statement here.]

What's old is new again, as trailers for two upcoming remakes of classic genre films have surfaced: the '80s vampire flick Fright Night and the gritty '70s thriller Straw Dogs. Look for them to hit theaters in August and September, respectively.
