Haters: Red State Movie Review

After a notoriously unusual, albeit somewhat successful, city-by-city self-distribution effort, Kevin Smith’s Red State — about a religious hate group’s violent endeavors — finally gets a nationwide(ish) release this weekend (see theaters here) before hitting home video on October 18. Not-So-Bigfoot: Savage DVD Review

Aside from 2006’s confusingly titled Abominable, horror movies centered on the Bigfoot legend tend to be pretty terrible, and with that in mind, the newly released Savage is actually pretty good — though by any other standards, it’s an average, SyFy-level affair. But frankly, that’s better than can be said about many direct-to-video offerings. Read about it in my review of Savage.

2009’s Laid to Rest introduced one of the more memorable slasher villains in recent memory (not necessarily a high compliment, given the contenders) in ChromeSkull. Although those of you unfamiliar with the 1971 film Straw Dogs will probably find the remake a hoot, fans of the original will no doubt find plenty of fodder to bolster complaints about the spate of modern Hollywood remakes. I can see both sides; while the remake is a solidly entertaining yarn, there's definitely something lost in the translation. Read about it in my review of Straw Dogs.
