Four years ago today - February 29, 2012 - my first favorite musician/hero died. Seriously, if it weren't for Davy Jones and the work he did with The Monkees I wouldn't give a single care about music.
There were some lovely, moving moments in the memorial service of Concepcion Picciotto at Luther's Place Church on Saturday. Concepcion is known -- with William Thomas, who died a few years ago -- for leading what is apparently the longest protest in U.S. history: Against nuclear weapons in Lafayette Park, in front of the White House .

Humbert Allen Astredo , a stage actor who played opposite James Earl Jones, Frank Langella and Elizabeth Taylor but is best remembered by generations of scared kids as the evil, devil-bearded warlock of Dark Shadows , died February 19 at the age of 86. No cause of death was given in a paid death notice published today in the New York Times . After performing for Joseph Papp's free Shakespeare in the Park and in various Off-Broadway productions, Astredo joined Shadows in 1968 in his primary role Nicholas Blair, a demon-summoning warlock and foe of witch hunters.

Last night's screening of I LOVE A MYSTERY at UCLA was followed by another film in the same series, THE UNKNOWN . While I LOVE A MYSTERY was shown in 16mm, THE UNKNOWN was a terrific 35mm print.
