This Halloween, 6-year-old Landri Grabenstein and her 8-year-old twin sisters Alli and Maddi Grabenstein will transform into the iconic Sanderson sisters from the classic 1993 film, 'Hocus Pocus'. Landri will dress as Mary, the quirky witch played by Kathy Najimy, while Alli will be Sarah played by Sarah Jessica Parker and Maddi will go as Winifred played by Bette Midler.

Eighth Grade hits upon the usual points we would expect from a film of this nature - mean girls, dreamy boys, and nerds of all stripes - but the movie is stripped of practically all artifice. Photographed in a manner that offers the actors no opportunities for reprieve or retreat, this is a raw and realistic movie, and viewers will be clenching their teeth each time they anticipate the worst for poor, withdrawn Kayla and breathing a sigh of relief every time something fortuitous breaks her way.

For the last decade, the Arizona Curriculum Theater has presented Edgar Allan Poe's work in a unique format, from the perspective of his characters housed inside a 19th-century insane asylum. This year, Poefest, the organization's largest fundraiser and celebration of Poe, will commemorate its 10th anniversary with performances at the Hotel San Carlos, Don Bluth Front Row Theatre and Rosson House until the end of October.

When I got the go-ahead to write a couple of Halloween themed stories for October, my head went to the obvious: movie reviews, haunted house reviews, costume ideas, etc. So, originally, this was going to be a review of Halloween Horror Nights, which I attended last Friday.

After being trolled by Fox News, the Halloween actress ends up echoing Reagan when it comes to waiting periods and assault-weapon bans. Does anyone else remember the 1990s, when conservatives and Republicans such as Sen. Bob Dole would attack Hollywood for making violent movies that he claimed caused violence in the real world? He also was happy to criticize movies he admitted he hadn't watched.

Screenings of silent horror films near Halloween with live accompaniment on a pipe organ, just as in the 1920s, have become popular in recent years, including in downtown Los Angeles at Disney Hall . Claremont and Pomona are both getting into the spooky act this year.
