Police say a taxi driver in a northern suburb of New York City is accused of stabbing a passenger during an argument that ended with the vehicle crashing into a tree. Authorities say the argument involved the route the cabbie was taking.

Maybe it's a just a sign of the Blumhouse-era horror-movie world we find ourselves in, but there's something refreshing about a scare flick that actually shows you its monster occasionally and gives you a definite reason to be afraid of it. Hiding things in shadows to enhance audience fears is fine, but franchises like Paranormal Activity have taken us way too far in the other direction, where both the scary thing and the stakes only really become apparent after about 70 minutes of bumps in the night, with 10 minutes of screen time remaining.

Some cultures cast Friday the 13th as a superstitious perfect storm, a combination of two already "unlucky" things, Fridays and the number 13. There are many theories to when fear of that number first originated, said David Tabb Stewart, associate professor and department chair of religious studies at Cal State Long Beach.
