Some people complain Hollywood movies have been dumbed down. If anything, they're getting too intellectual, especially the endless stream of belated sequels to late-20th century hits.

The forthcoming film was announced in 2015 with Dwayne Johnson starring as the lead character and is intended to be a follow-on from the 70-year-old director's original 1986 movie, which starred Kurt Russell and went on to become a cult classic despite initially disappointing at the box office. Carpenter believes that little respect will be paid to his story and instead the title has been selected so to be a well-known vehicle for Johnson.

Filmmakers Jen Soska, centre, and Sylvia Soska appear on the set of Rabid, their remake of David Cronenberg's classic horror, in Toronto. If there's a book on how to be a female storyteller who's inoffensive to the Hollywood establishment, twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska would probably send a chainsaw through it in one of their films.

It's "the monster of 'Frankenstein' plus the monster of 'Dracula,' plus the 'monstrousness' of Edgar Allan Poe," the ads boasted, "all combined by the master makers of screen mysteries to give you the absolute apex in super-shivery."

The top choices might surprise you, since they aren't titles that bring the scares, like Netflix's new hit series " The Haunting of Hill House, " but much tamer fare.
