What a thrill to get my macabre mitts on Vinegar Syndrome 's new Blu-ray Combo Pack release of George Bowers' Crown International potboiler The Hearse , a late-night television staple that I previously celebrated here . The modestly-budgeted, haunted house thriller was famously called out by Roger Ebert for being a "garage sale" horror film, as it shamelessly cobbled and cribs its identity from then-contemporary hits like The Amityville Horror , The Omen films, Dan Curtis' Burnt Offerings and Peter Medak's The Changeling .

It Follows is a slasher film without the slasher, it's a tale of a supernatural boogeyman with no static form that conjured comparisons to some of the greatest films of the genre, most notably John Carpenter's Halloween. This connection was intended, as evidenced by certain elements Mitchell employed like the score, the visual style, and even the name of his lead character, "Jay," a nod to Halloween heroine Jamie Lee Curtis.

Steve Coogan has won the British Academy Television Award for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme, seeing off competition from fellow funnymen Harry Enfield , Asim Chaudhury and David Mitchell . The ceremony, held at Royal Festival Hall on London's Southbank, was hosted by Sue Perkins and attended by British TV's biggest stars including Ant and Dec, Olivia Colman, Thandie Newton and Ed Balls.
