‘The Mummy’ awkwardly stumbles into Dark Universe

"The Mummy" is a mess, a movie in such a hurry to introduce more monsters under Universal's "Dark Universe" banner that it comes awkwardly wrapped in impenetrable layers of exposition. Tom Cruise occupies center stage in this not-quite-a-reboot, which features Sofia Boutella as the Mummy, an Egyptian princess named Ahmanet who committed patricide, made a pact to unleash the god of death and was cursed by being buried alive for her troubles.

The woman whom fugitive movie director Roman Polanski admitted he raped 40 years ago will attend a court hearing in Los Angeles on Friday where she hopes to plead for an end to the case, Polanski's attorney said. Samantha Geimer was 13 years old when Polanski assaulted her in Los Angeles in 1977.

The Alabama Theatre in downtown Birmingham kicks off its 2017 Summer Film Series this weekend with the Alfred Hitchcock thriller "Psycho" on Friday, June 9, and the MGM classic "The Wizard of Oz" on Sunday, June 11. Over the next nine weeks, the nearly 90-year-old Showplace of the South will screen 18 movies, including old favorites such as "Singin' in the Rain" and "Gone with the Wind" and blockbusters such as "Independence Day" and "Ghostbusters." Also, this year, the Alabama will have a "Christmas in July" weekend with holiday favorites "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," "White Christmas" and "Elf."
