You only have to note the fact that we're not all wearing glittery jumpsuits and driving flying cars everywhere to realize that the future painted by science fiction isn't always in line with what the real world has to offer. Nevertheless, it only takes a cursory look at some of the genre's most notable movies and TV shows to see that sometimes sci-fi can get it very right indeed.

'Mother!," Darren Aronofsky's tour de force of allegorical misdirection, is about many things, in succession and simultaneously. What begins as a creepily insinuating chamber piece of domestic discord quickly takes on more metaphorical meanings, with drama giving way to outright horror: Here, a parable of marital anxiety becomes a lurid, Boschlike meditation on environmental destruction, idolatry and - ultimately - blind devotion to a greedy and insatiable god.

The director's 1983 Stephen King adaptation about a killer car with a mind of its own, is considered a classic and now Carpenter has revamped the story for a video to launch his new album, "Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998." The director, whose last film work was 2010's The Ward, even appears in the video as Christine's driver.
