Bob Clark's best known for Black Christmas , Porky's , and A Christmas Story , but his early 70s chiller deserves every bit as much praise. The horror elements are terrific as the undead soldier slowly falls apart and seeks out fresh blood, but its real strength is in its clear allegory for the trauma faced by both soldiers returning from war and the friends and family who welcome them back.

"Bram Stoker's Dracula," which turned 25 this month, is Exhibit A in our contention that the supposed "hack-for-hire" phase of iconic director Francis Ford Coppola need to be reappraised. That period was when the "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now" director was reduced, after the bankruptcy of his Zoetrope Studios, to projects such as "Peggy Sue Got Married," "Jack" and "The Rainmaker" .

Universal's Dark Universe saw The Mummy come back to life yet again on the big screen. It was the latest example of just how much sway the original Universal Monsters , such as The Mummy , Frankenstein , and even Dracula , still have with the movie-going public, as the studio continues to revisit these time-tested properties.

Veteran character actor Julio Oscar Mechoso died of a heart attack on Saturday, according to the Miami Herald . He was 62. With more than 120 acting credits to his name, Mechoso's long career spanned both movies and television, as well as comedy and drama.

Looking at the 60-year-old's long and diverse career, it is indeed hard to see many straight lines between, say, the roast beef sandwich-coveting Modell of the 1982 Barry Levinson classic "Diner" and the author of three books of homespun wisdom - "Couplehood," "Babyhood" and "Familyhood." Or to find the links tethering his entertaining villain Carter Burke of "Aliens" and the musician/composer who released 2010's "Unusual Suspects," a lovely album of ambient piano pop with singer-songwriter Julia Fordham.
