Since the magazine's very first issue, TIME has noted recent deaths and other important events of the week in the Milestones section. From commemorating their lives and accomplishments to celebrating their humor and outlook, here's a selection of the ways in which friends, colleagues and TIME staff remembered some of those those who died in 2017.
Bestselling writer Joyce Maynard will discuss and sign copies of her latest memoir, "The Best of Us," at the Oakland Public Library's Montclair Branch, 1687 Mountain Blvd., at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 9. Maynard was originally scheduled to appear at the Montclair library on Dec. 12, but the event was delayed by the city strike. "The Best of Us" tells the story of the author's discovery of her true partner, Jim Barringer, in mid-life only to lose him to a battle with cancer.
Love prevailed in the showbiz world in 2017, with plenty of weddings taking place along with the arrival of several high-profile new additions. However, the past 12 months has also seen a handful of notable splits and divorces, from Hollywood duo Chris Pratt and Anna Faris to Love Island champions Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies, who called time on their prize-winning relationship before the year was out.
And 2018 will be no exception as NOW TV has plenty of shows and films that should help banish those post-Christmas blues over the next 31 days. There's the return of Sky One's most successful sitcom, a brand new bloody historical drama and a second helping of a zany comedian's idea of a cookery show.
"I have the very first sweater I bought for Alan from Lillywhites in 1991," says Steve Coogan when I ask him about the birth of Alan Partridge. "It's a Lyle & Scott V-neck golfing sweater [pictured] and I keep it in a Ziploc bag in my house.
