Ridley Scott Producing Tell-Tale Heart Rework

Posted by support@reallyscary.com (ReallyScary.com) on October 31, 2007 THR reports Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free Prods. is going back to its genre roots with Tell-Tale, a modern-day reimagining of the Edgar Allan Poe classic The Tell-Tale Heart from director Michael Cuesta and screenwriter Dave Callaham.

"Tell-Tale is a psychological thriller that sets Poe's haunting tale against the backdrop of modern science," Scott Free president Michael Costigan said.

Scott Free is the company behind American Gangster, which bows Friday. The Scott brothers made their early name with Alien and The Hunger.

The Poe-inspired film will be produced by Ridley Scott, Tony Scott and Costigan as well as Social Capital's Christopher Tuffin and Martin Shore. Shore is a Santa Monica-based equity firm that was brought to Scott Free by indie film broker the Gordon Steel Co. Shore made his money in the real estate business, while Tuffin is a producer.

The film is budgeted at $20 million and will be shot in early 2008. Casting is under way. Gordon Steel and partner John Baca suggested that the tone of the film likely will be a cross between Jacob's Ladder and Marathon Man.

Underworld Getting Prequel Treatment

Posted by support@reallyscary.com (ReallyScary.com) on October 30, 2007 Betting on the success of the first two Underworld films, Sony's Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment are teaming for a third installment in the series with the prequel Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans, according to THR.

Patrick Tatopoulos, who created the creature effects for the first two "Underworld" films, will make his directorial debut with this one, which starts production in January in Auckland, New Zealand. "Underworld" creator Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films, will produce with Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Skip Williamson. Scott Strauss is overseeing for Screen Gems. Danny McBride, who co-wrote the first two "Underworld" screenplays with Wiseman, penned the third script.

The prequel is set in the Dark Ages and traces the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires and their one-time werewolf slaves, the Lycans.

Michael Sheen will reprise his role of Lycan master Lucian. Bill Nighy also will return as vampire elder Viktor. Rhona Mitra ("The Number 23") is joining the cast as Viktor's daughter and secret lover to Lucian. Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the first two films, will not be in the prequel.

"For the first time, we will experience the Underworld universe through the eyes of the Lycans," Wiseman said. "Patrick has always played such an essential part in helping to create 'Underworld' from the start. We have a terrific working relationship and a shared vision of the world and its characters, so I feel it is both exciting and fitting that Patrick now takes the helm on 'Rise of the Lycans.'"

Ghost House Picks Up Tattooist

Posted by support@reallyscary.com (ReallyScary.com) on October 30, 2007 THR reports Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures has inked a deal for North American rights to Peter Burger's The Tattooist, a supernatural thriller starring Jason Behr.

Burger and producer Robin Scholes enticed Tapert and Raimi to visit New Zealand to talk to Burger about the final cut and to help guide the final stages of postproduction, the producer said Tuesday.

"We started our careers independently producing our horror films and understand the challenges of these filmmakers," Tapert said.

For his part, Scholes said he was pleased to have "specialists in horror and thriller films" managing the U.S outing for the movie via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The North American deal was negotiated with Ghost House by Kathleen Drumm and James Thompson of NZ Film.

The movie will unspool at this week at the American Film Market and centers on Samoan spiritual beliefs about a U.S. tattoo artist who unwittingly unleashes a powerful and angry spirit with one of his designs.
