Underworld Awakening Claws Its Way to the Top of the Box Office

As expected, Underworld Awakening topped the US box office this past weekend, scoring an estimated $25.4 million. That’s on par with the other three films in the Underworld franchise, whose opening weekends have ranged from $20.8 million (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans) to $26.8 million (Underworld: Evolution). Of course, Awakening benefitted from elevated 3-D prices, but it’s still a good figure that, combined with The Devil Inside‘s strong opening three weeks ago, helps put the horror genre back on track after several flops in the latter half of 2011.
