George Romero, whose classic "Night of the Living Dead" and other horror films turned zombie movies into social commentaries and who saw his flesh-devouring undead spawn countless imitators, remakes and homages, has died. He was 77. Romero died Sunday following a battle with lung cancer, said his family in a statement provided by his manager Chris Roe.

The name Michael Armstrong will be familiar to horror fans, probably most prominently for his still-shocking Witchfinder General -riff Mark of the Devil , starring Herbert Lom and Udo Kier and whose international release was accompanied by vomit bags. Now, at the ripe old age of 73, Armstrong is creating history by being the first film-maker to publish his entire screenwriting output.

Starting with a blade-wielding killer who attacks a woman in the shower, Brian De Palma's 1981 conspiracy thriller Blow Out begins where his 1980 erotic suspense film Dressed to Kill ended, but only so that the director can distance himself from the kind of stalk-and-slash film that he has been pigeonholed as making. "I'm typed as the specialist in B-movie horror," he has said, and so Blow Out begins with a scene that is gradually revealed to be from a film-within-the-film, a low-budget horror movie called Coed Frenzy .

When ABC announced that it was bringing Roseanne back to audiences for a brand new season, the only things that interrupted fans' jubilant cheers were inquisitive ponderings on how in the world the revival would explain and/or reverse the show's reviled finale and things that happened after the show went off the air. Some of those issues have been addressed, such as Dan's heart attack and the whole memoirs aspect, but not much has been said about the character Mark Healy, whose portrayer Glenn Quinn died in 2002.
