Park Chan-wook made the stylized Gothic thriller Stoker at Fox, Kim Jee-woon went to Lionsgate for the Arnold Schwarzenegger shoot-'em-up The Last Stand , and, in the most publicized instance of them all, Bong Joon-ho teamed up with The Weinstein Company for his sci-fi graphic novel adaptation Snowpiercer . They were all in for a shock; treated as royalty in their homeland, the trio suddenly found themselves displaced from the top of the pecking order, losing status in the studio hierarchy to the executives and the money men.

Early on in "Alien: Covenant," before any spleens have ruptured or any Xenomorphs have reared their hideous heads, a large ship glides through outer space and unfurls its golden sails, like an ocean vessel catching a light breeze.

After all, we're talking about David Lynch - a filmmaker about whom novelist David Foster Wallace once said "It's hard to tell if he's a genius or an idiot" after seeing the director at work on the set of the 1997 film "Lost Highway." For months now, Lynch has been promoting the revival of his seminal ABC TV series "Twin Peaks" on Showtime.

This week brings Alien: Covenant to theaters, and fans will get to see how the horror style of the original Alien meshes with the more scientific side of Prometheus that attempts to explain the origin of the monstrous xenomorphs who love killing space colonists. That means there's no better time for the folks at Screen Junkies to deliver their send-up of James Cameron's sequel Aliens , which really upped the ante from what Ridley Scott created with the original Alien .

Officials at Global Creatures, the Australian company behind the hit arena show "Walking With Dinosaurs," said Wednesday their version of the classic ape story will land at the Broadway Theatre in the fall of 2018. Exact dates and cast will be announced later.

The Castro Theatre has the right idea: a pairing of creep-inducing films that upend the idea of small-town Northern California as an idyllic paradise untouched by outside chaos. Alfred Hitchcock 's 1963 thriller, the oft-screened "The Birds," shot in Bodega Bay in Sonoma County, will be shown three times on Sunday, May 21, while the Marin County-shot "Village of the Damned" gets a lone late screening.

T.J. Miller, star of 'The Emoji Movie', inadvertently made a splash on the eve of the 70th Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday . He parasailed onto a boat in a promotional stunt, but a few seconds after, lost his footing and fell into the water.
