Rocky Horror is more than a fan phenomenon; it's a bizarre yet empowering film that shows us the intersection of queer, working class, and geek cultures, although you don't have to be any of the previous to enjoy the hell out of it.

Back in the old days of the "Evil Dead" movies and "Army of Darkness, " writer-director Sam Raimi used to take great pleasure in playfully torturing Bruce Campbell in any way possible, filming several exhaustive slapstick-infused scenes that would do the Three Stooges proud. Of course, putting Campbell through the physical ringer wasn't enough, so Raimi would proceed to drench his longtime friend with gallons of fake blood, always striving for the most repugnant result possible.

Director Tim Burton has opened himself up to a whole new world with his new film, the dazzling "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," and he's brought with him largely a new cast of players for the trip. Apart from Eva Green and Terrance Stamp, who previously starred in Burton's "Dark Shadows" and "Big Eyes," respectively, the cast of "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" mostly consists of a slate of actors Burton has never worked with before.

Nobody actually utters the infamously over-the-top line "it's alive!" in Frankenstein 1930 - White Rock Players Club's contribution to this fall's round of spooky Halloween-season thrillers, now playing at Coast Capital Playhouse. But producer and past club president Fred Partridge said that in all other respects Fred Carmichael's adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic - set squarely in the middle of the early-talkie era that spawned the original Universal Pictures- Boris Karloff Frankenstein - fulfills every requisite of its delightfully creaky idiom, right down to a laboratory set that promises to deliver a few sparks and flashes along the way.
