Universal's plans to spin an expansive cinematic universe out of its iconic monster properties just got a big boost. Tom Cruise has officially signed on as the lead for the studio's first film in the series, a new reboot of The news also comes with yet another in Hollywood's recent string of blockbuster premiere date swaps , as the film will be released in June of 2017, instead of its original date of March 24. The new film is being helmed by prolific writer/producer/director Alex Kurtzman, who will reportedly produce and direct.

LL Cool J will receive the 2,571st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, honoring a pioneering recording career that made him the first rap artist to amass 10 consecutive platinum-plus selling albums. Queen Latifah and Sean “Diddy” Combs will join LL Cool J in speaking in the 11:30 a.m. ceremony in front of the Hard Rock Cafe on Hollywood Boulevard.

With the Golden Globes taking front and center Sunday, it was hard to get news on anything else. But sadly the one piece of news that did make it through the pipeline was the peaceful passing of famed "Phantasm" actor Much more than yet another horror villain, Scrimm and his iconic character played an integral part in my genre-shaping as I was growing up.

Born David Jones in London in 1947 in Brixton, he picked up the saxophone aged 13 and began singing with his first band at 15 before rising to fame in 1969 with Space Oddity. Bowie's website's biography describes him as someone who "elevated his music to what can only be described as an art form."
