"There's not a single piece of real footage," says visual effects supervisor Kevin Baillie, who built a digital version of lower Manhattan, circa 1974, for the Robert Zemeckis film about Philippe Petit's famous high-wire act. To re-create Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire performance at New York's World Trade Center for Robert Zemeckis' The Walk , which is on the Oscar VFX shortlist, the filmmakers had to start from scratch since the twin towers no longer exist.

The Film Lovers in Carroll County are starting off the new year with something they've never tried before, a documentary series. On Fridays, Jan. 8, 15 and 22, at the Carroll Arts Center, FLICC will host screenings of three recent documentaries: "I Am Divine," "The Wrecking Crew" and "SOMM."

TV rarely gets more intense and over-the-top as it did on Saturday night when Ash vs Evil Dead bid farewell to Season 1 with wacky hallucinations, Godfather references and disgusting monster babies. For fans hoping that creator Sam Raimi would once again use this franchise to reference the works of Wes Craven, particularly A Nightmare on Elm Street , disappointment was not in store.

Marine biologists have discovered Ninja Lanternshark! A new species of lantern shark called the Etmopterus benchleyi. They are found in the Pacific Ocean, near Central America.

A stealthy shark off the coast of Central America has an unusual advantage over its prey: its head glows. The Etmopterus benchleyi is the first lanternshark species to be discovered in that area, according to a report published in the Journal of the Ocean Science Foundation on Dec. 21. Its scientific name was given in honor of "Jaws" author Peter Benchley, who dedicated much of him time to promoting oceanic conservation.

Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss is scheduled to attend a 40th anniversary screening of 'Jaws,' on Saturday, Jan. 9, 7 p.m., at Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St., Clearwater. The evening will include a screening of the 1975 thriller 'Jaws' on the Capitol Theatre screen followed by a rare, candid, interactive discussion and Q&A with the film's star Richard Dreyfuss, hosted by Tampa Bay Times film critic Steve Persall.
