Starting this weekend, Showtime is attempting to fill the gaping, Dexter-sized hole in its Sunday lineup with Penny Dreadful, a supernatural period drama starring Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green that re-imagines characters from classic literary horror tales like Frankenstein, Dracula and The Picture of Dorian Gray. The first episode is currently available on Showtime's website, and if it's any indication, it could be must-watch material for horror fans going through Walking Dead withdrawal and/or tiring of True Blood's hijinks. It's a bit like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with a darker, horror angle, and hopefully, it can keep its pacing better than NBC's similarly revisionist Dracula did. Penny Dreadful begins airing on Showtime on Sunday, May 11 at 10:00 PM ET/PT -- opposite yet another re-imagining of a genre classic, NBC's Rosemary's Baby miniseries.
