As expected, the low-budget horror movie Oculus couldn't compete with blockbuster sequels Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Rio 2 this past weekend, finishing a distant third at the box office. It earned an estimated $12 million -- a respectable amount, but on the low side for a Jason Blum production. That figure is lower than Blum's Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones' $18.3 million opening from earlier this year but ahead of the $8.2 million bow of his Dark Skies last year. On the bright side, it's in line with Insidious' $13.3 opening in 2011; that film rode good word of mouth to a strong final tally of $54 million.
