Now that Devil's Due has been released, fans of straightforward horror unfortunately won't get another wide theatrical release that's up their alley until April, when Oculus and The Quiet Ones hit the big screen. We don't have any video yet from Oculus (although it's generated good buzz from festival screenings), but Lionsgate has just released a new trailer for The Quiet Ones -- about a group of college students who attempt to create a ghost -- and it looks promising. Together, the two films seem like they might be the best contenders for crossover horror hits of 2014 -- not counting sequels like The Purge 2 and Paranormal Activity 5.

Devil's Due, the latest found footage horror movie to hit theaters, underwhelmed at the box office in its opening weekend, earning an estimated $8.5 million -- good enough for only seventh place. That's a far cry from the similarly themed found footage hit The Devil Inside, which opened with a whopping $33.7 million two years ago this month, and is less than half of the $18.3 opening two weeks ago for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Still, as with most found footage fare, the production budget for Devil's Due was so low -- $7 million -- that it's still a lock to be profitable. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, meanwhile, fell all the way to 18th place in just its third week of release. It's made about $31 million to date.
