You’ve heard of an Indian summer, but what about an indie summer? As the blockbuster World War Z prepares to toss what some estimate as $400 million worth of special effects and stunts at viewers this week, a slew of independent horror and suspense movies are preparing to scare you on a much, much smaller scale over the next few months. Here’s a rundown of some of the more notable ones, featuring familiar faces like Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, Elijah Wood, Christian Slater, Josh Duhamel, Stephen Moyer, Radha Mitchell, Mischa Barton, Rebecca De Mornay, Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton.

Long after the ’80s heyday and the ’90s revival, there haven’t been too many original slasher franchises born in the 21st century, and in fact, the Hatchet films, which never received a wide theatrical release, might be the most prominent of the bunch (unless you count the Wrong Turn series, which combines slasher and backwoods torture fare). Is Hatchet III an appropriate finale (assuming it is indeed a finale) to this increasingly dormant sub-genre? Read about it in my review of Hatchet III.
