A full three and a half years ago, in the summer of 2009, there were plans for a sequel to the haunted house film The Haunting in Connecticut. Entitled The Haunting in Georgia, it was to shoot in the summer of 2010, and there was even talk of a third entry in the series, The Haunting in New York. But a funny thing happened on the way to the multiplex: nothing. Filming didn’t actually occur until 2011, and since then, Georgia apparently hasn’t been on many people’s minds, because there’s been no word on its release. Until now.

We may never get a Cloverfield 2, but Pacific Rim could be the next best thing. Unlike Cloverfield‘s single creature, it features multiple giant monsters wreaking havoc on Earth, with humanity responding by creating giant piloted robots to kick their otherworldly butts. And now we have a trailer, and it’s as big and visually striking as you’d expect — although as a horror fan, I would’ve liked to get a better look at the creatures. It will be interesting to see how much of a horror angle veteran genre director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Mimic, Blade II) incorporates into the film, but if the trailer is any indication, I’d say not much. Still, I’m rooting for Pacific Rim to succeed, if only because it could potentially boost del Toro’s pull in Hollywood to a level that maybe he could finally get his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness off the ground.

2012 had its share of good wide-release theatrical horror/suspense movies…but that share wasn’t very big. In fact, I had a hard time finding 10 I could legitimately call “good,” but since a “Top 8 or 9” list doesn’t have the ring of a “Top 10” list, I made lemonade. Check out my choices for Top 10 Wide Releases of 2012.

Reincarnate, the second film in the M. Night Shyamalan-produced Night Chronicles series (following 2010’s Devil), was announced two and a half years ago (under the name Twelve Strangers), and since that time, the series’ website has stated the film will shoot in 2011. Now, after an extended period of inactivity, Shyamalan has tweeted that it will finally begin production in 2013 — two years later than planned. He didn’t name the film, which might imply that it’s gone through yet another title change, but presumably the plot is the same: “While deciding the fate of an accused murderer, a jury is haunted by supernatural forces that hold the key to the case.” Last we heard, Reincarnate was written by Chris Sparling (Buried, ATM) and was to be directed by Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism).

The Breakfast Club meets Poltergeist meets Ten Little Indians. That's one way you could describe Bad Kids Go to Hell...but that would imply a level of quality this film can't even approach. Still, if that sounds interesting, you can read more in my review of Bad Kids Go to Hell.
