One of the most intriguing genre films currently in development is Kitchen Sink, whose wacky concept finds humans, vampires and zombies putting their differences aside to fight a common foe: aliens. The script made the 2010 edition of the Black List, which annually celebrates the most buzz-worthy screenplays amongst film executives.

The new “found footage” horror TV show The River debuted on Tuesday with lackluster numbers: 7.5 million total viewers and a 2.4 rating in the 18-49 adult demographic. By comparison, last month’s Alcatraz premiere (presumably targeting the same viewers) delivered 10 million total viewers and a 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demo.

Dark Circles, starring Johnathan Schaech and Pell James as a couple

If you haven’t realized it from films like The Devil Inside, The Last Exorcism, Apollo 18, Cloverfield, Quarantine and Chronicle, “found footage” is the hot thing in Hollywood. Now, Oren Peli, who triggered the recent explosion with Paranormal Activity, is bringing the format to TV with The River, the story of a rescue mission searching for a missing explorer in the Amazon that presumably uncovers some freaky supernatural stuff. The first two episodes, which air back-to-back on ABC on Tuesday, February 7, at 9:00 PM ET/PT, were directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, whose horror pedigree includes House of Wax and Orphan.

Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Harry Potter movie role comes in another book adaptation: The Woman in Black, based on the 1983 Susan Hill novel about a vengeful female ghost terrorizing a small British town. Too bad he doesn’t have a magic wand to help him. Read about it in my review of The Woman in Black.
