He’s a Maniac: Elijah Wood to Star in Serial Killer Remake

Elijah Wood, known primarily for mild-mannered, good-guy roles like Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will shift dramatically to the dark side in a planned remake of the controversial 1980 serial killer movie Maniac. Wood will play the titular role of Frank, a psychotic loner who stalks, kills and scalps women in an effort to gain some sort of revenge on his deceased, abusive mother. The remake comes from the folks who brought you P2 — director Franck Khalfoun and writers-producers Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur — and will begin shooting by the end of the year. It will be interesting to see if Aja (who’s himself directed several remakes: Piranha 3D, The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors) and company will be able to maintain the original’s sleaze factor, which was aided in part by the inherent nature of 1980-ish New York City.

August 2012 has suddenly gotten a lot busier for horror fans, as four — count ’em four — major genre films have been scheduled for that month. Late summer is traditionally a studio dumping ground for horror and suspense, and next year will be no exception, with these newly situated offerings:

Ti West might not have liked the final cut of Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (reportedly requesting his name be removed from the credits), but apparently there’s enough interest in the flesh-eating virus franchise to warrant a couple more films. Two new entries will film back to back in the spring of 2012 in the Dominican Republic, and based on the official synopses below, they appear to be prequels that trace the origin of the virus back to the Caribbean.

The 2005 French-Georgian thriller 13 Tzameti was so good that an English-language remake drew the likes of Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Ray Winstone, Alexander Skarsgard, David Zayas, Ben Gazzara, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Michael Shannon, Gaby Hoffmann and 50 Cent, not to mention the same writer-director…so where did it all go wrong? Find out in my review of 13.
