The Thing was one of my favorite movies growing up, so don’t take it lightly when I say that the prequel The Thing so effectively recreated the aura of the John Carpenter film that for a couple of hours, I was transported me back to to my youth, when formal dress meant matching your bandanas with your parachute pants. As we near Halloween, the horror/suspense releases come faster and furious-er, with The Thing getting a wide release this week and The Woman, The Skin I Live In and Texas Killing Fields getting limited runs. Home video, meanwhile, is headed by Zombie Diaries 2, the latest entry in the Eye series and something called Swamp Shark.

We now have our first look at the trailer for the John Cusack period murder mystery The Raven — about Edgar Allen Poe tracking down a serial killer — and it looks pretty entertaining, sort of like Sherlock Holmes meets Sleepy Hollow minus the sense of humor. We’ll have plenty of time to ponder it, because the movie doesn’t hit theaters for five months: March 9, 2012.
